Introducing The Williton Chamber of Commerce
A meeting was held in West Somerset Council Chamber on Wednesday 14th April, attended by 30 people from Williton businesses. The motivation behind the initiative was to set up a forum, for anyone in business in Williton, in order to develop a much-needed sense of unity and build up the area, including the tourist industry.
Brian Tyner the postmaster at Williton, chaired the meeting with the support of Ross & Rebecca James, of Catwell House B&B. Sandra Wilson, Chairperson of both the Somerset Chamber of Trade and Commerce and West Somerset Business Forum, addressed the meeting and explained the workings and benefits of possibly becoming a Chamber of Commerce, she said that she would be happy to advise where she could and commended those present for their enthusiasum.
Corinne Matthews, the Regeneration Officer in the West Somerset Council, also spoke and said that she was sure that such a group would be a great benefit to the area she also offered her support. John Richards, Chairman of the Watchet Chamber of Commerce, was also present in order to offer his support for the initiative and share how Watchet has benefited from businesses working together in a similar manner.
There was some discussion across the floor regarding the motivation and vision of those attending. Edward Martin, of Jones' Greengrocers and Edward Martin Computer Service's, will set up a website and several people offered to be on the steering committee. There was a real sense of enthusiasm and an air of collective anticipation as the various ideas and talents became evident. Each person present was asked to complete a questionnaire so that all relevant information could be collated. The clear benefits that were immediately obvious are, being part of a valuable website, at very little cost, where each business can place their details, the development of a Local Business Directory, the opportunity to be involved in issues of concern such as parking in the village as well as the much talked about by pass road making williton a 'walker friendly village' so that the Tourist are attracted which will in turn boost the local economy.
How to Join Us
There are still many businesses operating in and from Williton that were not represented and it was agreed that they should be encouraged to become part of this exciting initiative.
Questionnaires are available as a download or can collected from the Williton Post Office. We are sure that you would also benefit and we know that 'Williton needs you!'
